WHY PLAY IS THE KEY TO EARLY EDUCATION
‘A worm, we found a worm!’ the children at The Woodentops Kindergarten shout.
This is hardly surprising as it is ‘Muddy Monday’ and the children, aged 2-4 years old, are in the mud kitchen, baking mud pies and digging for mini-beasts, using giant magnifying glasses and torches to help with their search.
This is a typical day at The Woodentops Kindergarten, part of The White House Prep School family, which encourages children to learn through play both inside and outside the classroom.
‘Children are able to take the lead on their activities, whether this be at the outside Waterwall or making a Gruffalo Den in the Creative room,’ says Founder and Principal, Mary McCahery, who understands this freedom is essential in developing a child’s desire to learn and help them gain confidence and independence.
‘We have a team of incredibly experienced teachers who are wonderful at teaching the children in an exciting and engaging way,’ says Headmaster, Daniel Cummings.
‘The seven areas of learning are all focused on to ensure pupils are fully prepared for their next step into Reception and this is expanded on at the Kindergarten with weekly ballet, French, sport, music and yoga. We also work closely with parents, and welcome them as partners in their child’s education.’
Located between Clapham and Balham, The Woodentops Kindergarten, is still thriving 30 years on from its inception in 1985. With 40 years teaching experience, Mary is still at the helm today and together with her daughter, Grace, The Woodentops Kindergarten which operates two classes in both the morning and afternoon, is continuing to expand.

With Mary’s other two daughters Principals of the successful Woodentops Nurseries in SW4 and SW12, the importance placed on family can be felt around the School and creates a caring and considerate environment which all pupils from Kindergarten to Year 6 thrive in.
Headmaster Daniel Cummings understands the importance of including the Kindergarten in the whole school: ‘They feel supported and learn from their peers, and they always steal the show at the Nativity Play!’
Many of the children at the Woodentops Kindergarten continue their education at The White House Prep School and the ethos remains the same – to provide high quality education and excellent pastoral care to create well-rounded, happy and confident children, and isn’t that what every parent wants for their child?
