UNDERSTANDING THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF TEENAGERS
Since joining the North Bridge House family, Jonathan Taylor, Head of North Bridge House Senior and Sixth Form Canonbury, has looked to harness the research of experts in ‘Teen Development’ to maximise his pupils’ potential. Here, he reveals the secret of his school’s success since its doors opened in 2014 and the exciting changes afoot in 2017
‘Thanks to small classes we can really get to know our pupils and provide each individual with teaching that inspires and challenges them, backed by the support required to help them succeed,’ Jonathan Taylor explained.
‘In addition, we want to work with, not against, the needs of our teens. We take into account their body clocks, learning patterns and different phases of brain development – plus we don’t assume that just because they may look like an adult, they think in the same way.’

Mr Taylor has also sought to share this insight. He has hosted evening events featuring expert researchers Dr Paul Kelley and Prof Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, as well as mental health campaigner Jonny Benjamin, to help parents better understand and nurture their developing teens through the turbulent adolescent years.
It’s clear that the progressive approach of Jonathan Taylor and his team at the Senior and Sixth Form is paying off. Ofsted’s ‘Outstanding’ inspection report found that the ‘Highly effective teaching and support from dedicated staff ensure that students’ academic and personal development is outstanding’.
What’s more, August’s A level results saw many students exceed their ALIS predictions, evidencing Ofsted’s observation that ‘students make well above expected levels of progress over time’.

Mr Taylor is now steering his school into new territory: ‘In response to increasing demand for more secondary education options in the Islington area, we are now offering entry at year 7, 9 and 12 to our Senior and Sixth Form. Along with our sister Senior School in Hampstead, we can now provide North London Parents with a wider choice and an educational environment where children are nurtured to exceed expectation.’
