The Moat School, based in Bishop’s Park, Fulham, has celebrated the first year of its Lower School programme. This independent school specialises in providing a mainstream education for pupils diagnosed with a SpLD (Specific Learning Difficulty) such as Dyslexia or Dyspraxia but it also provides a home for pupils who have difficulties finding success in a traditional educational environment.
Since 1998 The Moat School has provided a place where pupils can excel in their academic education, receiving the extra help and support needed to access the curriculum. Difficulties such as Dyslexia are catered for, but are not the only focus.
Underlying difficulties are addressed in a way that allows all pupils to maximise their potential, and find success in their future endeavours. Clare King, Headmistress, says, ‘The Moat School is mainstream in structure, specialist in nature’.
Unusually, not only are all staff subject specialists but they are also post graduate Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) qualified. Staff who join the school without this level of qualification, are required to undertake a Level 5, year-long training course for teaching learners with SpLD. The school also initiates a whole school training programme for L3 Success with Learners with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
The school has a therapeutic team which consists of Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and School Counsellors, all of whom ensure that therapeutic provision is embedded into the curriculum.
This wealth of expertise has led to The Moat School becoming one of the top performing SEN schools in the country in terms of added value. In 2016 GCSE results for pupils achieving grades between A*-C were 61.7%, with the national average for all schools across the country being 66.9%[i] while state funded SEN programmes had a 38.4%[ii] pass rate.

Above all The Moat is concerned with producing independent and emotionally resilient learners who are in a strong position for their future careers. Underpinning academic support is a resilient framework and other interventions that help to reduce anxiety in the classroom.
Following 20 years of success at Secondary level, in September 2016 the school opened its doors to Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. The Lower School curriculum is consistently engaging and fun, allowing pupils in these groups to overcome their initial barriers and gain a passion for learning. The central ethos is that early intervention results in early remediation.
Lower School parents commented: ‘Our child has settled extremely well as a result of the excellent procedures and practices in place’, and, ‘Our daughter has already had a tremendously positive boost to her confidence and overall contentedness. She loves the school! And we are tremendously impressed with the attention and understanding of the entire Moat team’.
The Moat School is now taking application for starters aged 9-10. Email email@example.com or call 020 7610 9018 to arrange a tour of the school or enquire about admissions
